When you think of getting lucky, do you imagine the experience in private or in public? While some Americans stick to the bedroom, others take to the streets to get it on, with some going into the most public of places to have sex. So where are people most willing to take the risk?

That’s what the team at Lucky.me determined to find out. We surveyed Americans in several of the country’s largest cities to learn where people are least shy about expressing themselves romantically. We asked a variety of questions from how many times respondents have had sex in public, in which public places they have got it on, and more.

We then calculated a score based on responses to create a Lucky in Public score on a scale from 0 to 100. Read on to learn if the city you call home is a hot spot for public sex in America.

The U.S. Cities That Get Lucky in Public the Most and Least

Our research found that 1 in 2 Americans say they have had sex in public, but some parts of the country are more likely than others to feel a thrill by doing the deed away from home. Leading the charge is Sacramento, CA, with a lucky-in-public score of 94.94 out of 100. Residents of the state’s capital city have experienced their romantic life outside of the bedroom more than any other city.

Sacramento, CA, residents reported getting lucky in many public places but were the most likely to have had sex in a school and at a bus stop. Coming in second with a score of 83.08 is Philadelphia, PA, where 1 in 2 residents say having sex in public is more fun than in private. In third place with a score of 82.94 out of 100, is Denver, CO, where 3 in 4 residents have had sex in public.

On the other end of the spectrum, we found that residents of Raleigh, NC, New York, NY, and Seattle, WA have sex in public the least. Perhaps this stems from concerns of getting in trouble, as nearly 2 in 5 Americans who haven’t had sex in public say they would if they knew they wouldn’t get caught.

Overall, millennials and Gen Xers are the generations that have sex in public the most. Additionally, men are more likely than women to get lucky in public. We also discovered that of those who have done the deed, nearly 2 in 5 plan to have sex in public again in the future.

The Most Popular Public Places Americans Have Had Sex

After discovering the cities Americans are having sex in public most often, we turned our attention to the specific locations people get lucky. Leading the way is a parked car with 95% of people who have had sex in public saying they’ve gotten it on there.

Up next on the list are nature trails and wooded areas as 1 in 2 people say they have hooked up there. We return to the car for third place, but this time it’s on the go as 46% of people say they have gotten lucky in a moving car.

In fourth place, we move away from the car . . . but not too far as 44% of people have done the deed in a parking lot, outside of a car. Park benches, beach, and behind a building or alley follow closely behind in fifth, sixth, and seventh place, respectively.

When getting lucky in public, there is always a risk of getting caught. In fact, nearly 1 in 5 people have been, and 45% of them still plan to get it on in public again in the future. Additionally, 3 in 10 Americans say they have public places from this list on their sex bucket list.

Methodology

In this study, we set out to determine where in the U.S. Americans are having sex in public most often. To do this, we surveyed residents of the largest cities in the country and asked about their experiences getting lucky in public.

We asked a variety of questions including if they have ever had sex in public, which types of experiences they've had, how many times they've had sex in public, which places they have done the deed, and more. We then awarded points to responses that showed sexual activity in public and calculated the average score for each city based on residents' scores. Finally, we adjusted those scores on a scale of 0 to 100, with 100 representing the most sex in public.
